(A) Hydrogen bonding (only possible with an O-H group) needs extra energy to break, raising ethanol's boiling point far above the isomeric ether's. (B) A non-polar solvent plus low temperature limits phenol's bromination to mono-substitution.

(A) Ethanol vs methoxymethane (dimethyl ether), same molecular formula C2H6O:

Ethanol (CH3CH2OHCH_3CH_2OH) has a hydroxyl (-OH) group, so its molecules can form strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds (O-H...O) with each other. Breaking these hydrogen bonds to vaporise the liquid requires significant extra energy, giving ethanol a relatively high boiling point (78.5 C).

Methoxymethane (CH3OCH3CH_3OCH_3), though it has the same molecular formula, has no H atom directly bonded to oxygen — the ether molecule has no O-H to donate a hydrogen bond to another ether molecule. So ether molecules are held together only by weak dipole-dipole and van der Waals forces, giving it a much lower boiling point (-24 C).

(B) Phenol + Br2 in CS2 (a non-polar solvent) at low temperature: …
