Five standard named organic reactions: Cannizzaro (disproportionation of an aldehyde without α-H), HVZ (α-halogenation of a carboxylic acid), iodoform (haloform test on a methyl ketone), acetylation (ester formation with an acid anhydride), and aldol condensation (self-addition of an aldehyde with α-H).

  1. Cannizzaro reaction (self oxidation-reduction of an aldehyde with no α-hydrogen, in concentrated alkali): 2HCHO+NaOH→CH3OH+HCOONa2HCHO + NaOH \rightarrow CH_3OH + HCOONa (One molecule of formaldehyde is reduced to methanol, the other oxidised to sodium formate.)
  2. Hell–Volhard–Zelinsky (HVZ) reaction (α-halogenation of a carboxylic acid having an α-hydrogen, using Cl2/Br2 with red phosphorus): CH3COOH+Cl2→Red PClCH2COOH+HClCH_3COOH + Cl_2 \xrightarrow{Red\ P} ClCH_2COOH + HCl (Acetic acid gives chloroacetic acid.)
  3. Iodoform reaction (haloform reaction of a methyl ketone with I2/NaOH): CH3COCH3+3I2+4NaOH→CHI3↓+CH3COONa+3NaI+3H2OCH_3COCH_3 + 3I_2 + 4NaOH \rightarrow CHI_3\downarrow + CH_3COONa + 3NaI + 3H_2O (Acetone gives a yellow precipitate of iodoform.)
  4. Acetylation (introduction of an acetyl group, e.g. reaction of ethanol with acetic anhydride): C2H5OH+(CH3CO)2O→CH3COOC2H5+CH3COOHC_2H_5OH + (CH_3CO)_2O \rightarrow CH_3COOC_2H_5 + CH_3COOH (Ethanol is acetylated to ethyl acetate.) …
