These are three classic named organic reactions: Cannizzaro is a disproportionation of aldehydes lacking alpha-hydrogen; HVZ installs a halogen alpha to a carboxylic acid; and the carbylamine reaction is a diagnostic test for primary amines.

a) Cannizzaro reaction:

Aldehydes that have no alpha-hydrogen (e.g. HCHO, C6H5CHO) undergo self oxidation-reduction (disproportionation) on treatment with concentrated NaOH/KOH: one molecule is oxidised to a carboxylate salt, while another is reduced to the corresponding alcohol.

2HCHO→conc. NaOHCH3OH+HCOONa2\text{HCHO} \xrightarrow{\text{conc. NaOH}} \text{CH}_3\text{OH} + \text{HCOONa}

b) Hell-Volhard-Zelinsky (HVZ) reaction:

Carboxylic acids with an alpha-hydrogen, when treated with Cl2 or Br2 in the presence of a small amount of red phosphorus, undergo substitution of the alpha-hydrogen by halogen, giving an alpha-halo carboxylic acid.

CH3COOH→red PCl2CH2ClCOOH+HCl\text{CH}_3\text{COOH} \xrightarrow[\text{red P}]{\text{Cl}_2} \text{CH}_2\text{ClCOOH} + \text{HCl}

c) Carbylamine reaction:

Primary amines (aliphatic or aromatic), on heating with chloroform and alcoholic KOH, form isocyanides (carbylamines), which have a highly offensive smell. …
