Cells contain three main types of RNA — mRNA, tRNA and rRNA — each with a distinct role in protein synthesis.

RNA (ribonucleic acid) exists in a cell mainly as three functionally distinct types:

  1. mRNA (messenger RNA): carries the genetic information transcribed from DNA (as a complementary copy of one DNA strand) to the ribosomes, serving as the template for protein synthesis (translation). It is the least abundant but carries the actual coded message.

  2. tRNA (transfer RNA): a small, clover-leaf-shaped RNA that reads the codons on the mRNA (via its anticodon) and carries the corresponding specific amino acid to the ribosome, adding it to the growing polypeptide chain during translation. Each amino acid has its own specific tRNA(s).
