DNA fingerprinting exploits the unique repeat (VNTR) pattern in every individual's DNA and is used for forensics, paternity testing, identification and population/evolution studies.

Every person (except identical twins) has a unique DNA sequence, especially in the repetitive non-coding regions (VNTRs). DNA fingerprinting resolves these repeat patterns into a band pattern that is characteristic of the individual.
