Pairing a Cu/Cu²⁺ half-cell with the standard hydrogen electrode gives E°cell = +0.34 V, with Cu as the cathode.

Cell set-up: a standard hydrogen electrode (SHE) — platinum foil coated with platinum black, dipped in 1 M H⁺ solution with H₂ gas at 1 atm bubbled over it — is connected via a salt bridge to a copper electrode dipped in 1 M CuSO₄ solution.

Since E°(Cu²⁺/Cu) = +0.34 V is greater than E°(H⁺/H₂) = 0 V, copper has a greater tendency to be reduced, so it acts as the cathode, and the SHE acts as the anode.

Diagrammatic cell representation:

Pt(s),H2(g,1 atm) ∣ H+(1M) ∣∣ Cu2+(1M) ∣ Cu(s)Pt(s), H_2(g,1\ atm) \,|\, H^+(1M) \,||\, Cu^{2+}(1M) \,|\, Cu(s)

(SHE on the left = anode; Cu electrode on the right = cathode, joined by a salt bridge, shown as ||)
