Balmer-series transitions end at n=2n=2; using the Rydberg formula, their wavelengths (about 400–656 nm) lie in the visible part of the spectrum, which is why they were the first hydrogen lines discovered.

The Balmer series arises from electron transitions in the hydrogen atom from higher energy levels n=3,4,5,…n=3,4,5,\ldots down to the n=2n=2 level. Its wavelengths are given by the Rydberg formula:
