Deviation is minimum for the symmetric ray path through a prism; the ii–δ\delta graph is U-shaped with its lowest point at i=i0i=i_0.

Angle of minimum deviation (DmD_m): As the angle of incidence ii on a prism is gradually increased from a small value, the angle of deviation δ\delta first decreases, reaches a minimum value, then increases again. This minimum value of δ\delta is called the angle of minimum deviation, DmD_m.

At minimum deviation, the ray passes symmetrically through the prism: the angle of incidence equals the angle of emergence (i1=i2=ii_1 = i_2 = i), and correspondingly the two angles of refraction inside the prism are equal (r1=r2=r=A/2r_1=r_2=r=A/2); the ray inside the prism travels parallel to its base.

Factors it depends on:

  1. The refracting (apex) angle AA of the prism.
  2. The refractive index μ\mu of the prism material, related by μ=sin⁡(A+Dm2)sin⁡(A/2)\mu = \dfrac{\sin\left(\frac{A+D_m}{2}\right)}{\sin(A/2)}.
  3. The wavelength/colour of the incident light (since μ\mu depends on wavelength — dispersion), so different colours have slightly different DmD_m.
  4. The surrounding medium and temperature (through their effect on μ\mu). …
