5. Major Institutions Conducting EDPs in India
Entrepreneurship development in India is carried on by a large network of institutions working at the national, state and district levels. They train entrepreneurs, prepare course material and trainers, conduct research, and provide finance and support. You should be able to name the important ones and describe their role accurately.
National-level institutions.

NIESBUD — National Institute for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development. NIESBUD is an apex national institute set up by the Government of India (under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship) and located at Noida. Its role is chiefly one of coordination and standard-setting: it designs model syllabi and training material for entrepreneurship programmes, conducts training of trainers (so that others can run EDPs across the country), organises programmes for entrepreneurs, evaluates EDPs, and carries out research and documentation in the field of entrepreneurship and small business.

EDII — Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India. EDII is an autonomous, national-level institute located at Ahmedabad, sponsored by leading public financial institutions and supported by the Government of India. It is a pioneer in entrepreneurship education and research: it designs and conducts EDPs and trainers' training programmes, develops teaching material and tools for identifying and developing entrepreneurial competencies, offers post-graduate education in entrepreneurship, and undertakes research and consultancy on entrepreneurship development, including special programmes for women, rural and disadvantaged groups.

NSIC — National Small Industries Corporation. NSIC is a Government of India enterprise (under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) whose role is to aid, promote and foster the growth of small and micro enterprises. Alongside services such as supply of machinery on easy terms, marketing and credit support, NSIC runs training and incubation programmes and technical/entrepreneurship development programmes that help new entrepreneurs acquire skills and start their units.

IIE — Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship. IIE is a national institute (also under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship), located at Guwahati, with a special focus on entrepreneurship development in the North-Eastern region. It conducts EDPs and trainers' training, undertakes research, and develops entrepreneurship in areas that need special attention.

NI-MSME — National Institute for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. Located at Hyderabad, this national institute (under the Ministry of MSME) conducts training, research and consultancy for the development of micro, small and medium enterprises and their entrepreneurs, including entrepreneurship and management development programmes.
State and district-level institutions.

State-level Entrepreneurship / Institutes of Entrepreneurship Development. Many states run their own Institutes of Entrepreneurship Development (IEDs) or Centres for Entrepreneurship Development which conduct EDPs tailored to local conditions and reach a large number of participants within the state.

MSME Development Institutes (MSME-DIs). Set up by the Government of India in the states, these institutes provide technical and entrepreneurship training, project guidance and consultancy to small and micro entrepreneurs.

District Industries Centres (DICs). DICs operate at the district level and are usually the first point of contact for a new entrepreneur. They help with registration, provide information and guidance, arrange EDPs locally, and help entrepreneurs obtain finance and other support from various agencies.

Directorate of Industries and State Financial / Industrial Development Corporations. The state Directorate of Industries and bodies such as the State Financial Corporations and State Small Industries Development Corporations support entrepreneurship by providing finance, developed land and sheds, and by organising or sponsoring development programmes.

KVIC — Khadi and Village Industries Commission and SIDBI — Small Industries Development Bank of India.
