Problems Faced by Micro and Small Enterprises

Despite their importance, micro and small enterprises face many difficulties that limit their growth and survival. An entrepreneur planning a small venture should know these problems in advance so as to prepare for them.

1. Shortage of finance. MSEs have little capital of their own and often find it hard to get bank loans (banks ask for security they cannot provide). They may then depend on costly informal lenders, which raises their expenses.

2. Problems in marketing. Small units lack the money for advertising, branding and a wide distribution network. They struggle to compete with large firms and are sometimes cheated by middlemen who buy their goods cheaply.

3. Shortage and poor quality of raw materials. MSEs buy in small quantities, so they pay higher prices, get lower priority from suppliers and sometimes receive poorer-quality materials.

4. Outdated technology. Many small units use old machines and simple methods because they cannot afford modern equipment. This lowers productivity and quality.

5. Shortage of skilled labour and managerial talent. Small units cannot pay high wages, so skilled workers and trained managers prefer large firms. The owner often has to handle everything alone.

6. Competition from large enterprises. Large firms enjoy economies of scale, better technology and stronger brands, and can sell at lower prices — making it hard for MSEs to survive.

7. Under-utilisation of capacity. Because of weak demand, finance and material problems, many small units run below their full capacity, which raises their cost per unit.

8. Delayed payments and sickness. MSEs that supply large buyers often face long delays in receiving payment, which strains their cash flow; persistent problems can push a unit into "sickness" (continuous losses and inability to repay dues).
