Primary (main) memory is directly connected to the CPU and holds the data and instructions the CPU needs right now. It is very fast but relatively small and costly, and in the case of RAM it is temporary (volatile) — its contents are lost when the power is off. Its main types are RAM and ROM.
Secondary (auxiliary) storage keeps data and programs permanently, even when the power is off. It is much larger and cheaper per unit, but slower than primary memory. It is where files are saved for the long term. Examples include the hard disk drive, SSD, CD/DVD, and pen drive.
| Basis | Primary memory | Secondary storage |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Very fast | Slower |
| Size | Small | Large |
| Cost per unit | High | Low |
| Permanence | Mostly temporary (RAM is volatile) | Permanent (non-volatile) |
| Link to CPU | Works directly with the CPU | Not directly worked on by the CPU |
