Q.Consider the temperature (in Celsius) of 7 days of a week as 34, 34, 27, 28, 27, 34, 34. Identify the appropriate statistical technique to be used to calculate the following:

Match each ask to its statistical technique: average → arithmetic mean, spread between extremes → range (max − min), typical deviation from the mean → standard deviation. For this week: mean ≈ 31.14 °C, range = 7 °C, SD ≈ 3.31 °C.

Choosing the technique

  • a) Average temperature → arithmetic mean. Add all the values and divide by how many there are. It is the single number that best represents the week's overall temperature level.
  • b) Temperature range → range. The simplest measure of spread: maximum − minimum. Here it tells you the week swung between its hottest and coldest day by this many degrees.
  • c) Standard deviation. The proper measure of how far a typical day strays from the mean. Because we have the temperatures of all 7 days (the entire "population" of that week, not a sample), the population standard deviation is the right choice.

The calculation, step by step

Mean = (34 + 34 + 27 + 28 + 27 + 34 + 34) ÷ 7 = 218 ÷ 7 ≈ 31.14 °C.

Range = 34 − 27 = 7 °C.

For the SD, square each day's deviation from the mean, average those squares (variance ≈ 10.98), then take the square root ≈ 3.31 °C.

import statistics

temps = [34, 34, 27, 28, 27, 34, 34]

mean_t  = statistics.mean(temps)
range_t = max(temps) - min(temps)
sd_t = statistics.pstdev(temps) # population SD: we have ALL 7 days of the week

print("Mean :", round(mean_t, 2))
print("Range:", range_t) …
