It came into use to overcome the drawbacks of barter — above all the need for a double coincidence of wants (each party had to want exactly what the other offered), the absence of a common measure of value, and the difficulty of storing value in perishable goods.
Money performs four main functions, each with a direct business use:
- Medium of exchange — money is accepted in payment, so buying and selling no longer require a double coincidence of wants. Business use: a firm can sell its output to anyone and buy inputs from anyone, without needing a matching barter partner.
- Measure (unit) of value — the prices of all goods are expressed in one money unit. Business use: a firm can quote prices, keep accounts, and compare costs and revenues on a single common scale.
- Store of value — purchasing power can be held over time in money form. Business use: a firm can hold working capital and reserves, and set aside funds for future purchases or emergencies. …
