These four terms recur throughout Business Economics, and everyday language uses them loosely, so precise meanings matter.

1. Utility. Utility is the want-satisfying power of a good or service — its capacity to satisfy a human want. It is subjective (differs across people and over time) and value-neutral (a good has utility because it is wanted, not because it is useful or morally good). Utility is the reason a good is desired at all.

2. Value. In economics, value means value in exchange — the worth of a good expressed in terms of other goods, or most conveniently in terms of money. It must be distinguished from value in use (mere usefulness). The water–diamond paradox illustrates this: water has high value in use but low value in exchange, while diamonds are the reverse — because exchange value depends on scarcity and marginal utility, not usefulness alone. A good has value in exchange only if it possesses utility and is scarce.

3. Price. Price is value expressed in terms of money — the amount of money for which a good or service is bought or sold. It is the money-measure of a commodity's exchange value, determined in the market by the interaction of demand and supply. Price is therefore value made concrete in money terms.

4. Wealth. Wealth is the stock of all economic goods that have value in exchange — that is, goods which possess (i) utility, (ii) scarcity, and (iii) transferability. Free goods like air are useful but are not wealth (not scarce, no price); personal qualities like intelligence are valuable but not wealth (not transferable). Wealth is a stock of valuable, scarce, transferable goods, distinct from money and from income (a flow).

How they are related. The four concepts form a logical chain:

  • A good is desired because it has utility (want-satisfying power). …
