Q.The marks scored by 8 students in a Business Statistics unit test (out of 50) are: 32, 45, 28, 38, 41, 25, 36, 48. Find the Range and the Coefficient of Range.
Concept understanding — Range and Coefficient of Range
Range is the simplest measure of dispersion — the difference between the largest and smallest values — and the coefficient of range is its relative (unit-free) version used to compare spread across data sets. Range shows absolute spread; the coefficient makes that spread comparable.
Range = L−S (largest − smallest). Coefficient of Range = L+SL−S. The coefficient is a pure ratio, so it can compare dispersion between series measured in different units or of different sizes.
The formulas
Range=L−S
Coefficient of Range=L+SL−S
where L = highest value and S = lowest value. For a frequency distribution, use the upper limit of the highest class as L and the lower limit of the lowest class as S.
Worked illustration
Marks: 20, 35, 48, 60. Then L=60, S=20: Range =60−20=40, and Coefficient of Range =60+2060−20=8040=0.5.
Why the relative measure matters
A range of 40 marks means very different things for a test out of 50 versus one out of 500. Dividing by (L+S) removes the scale, letting you say which distribution is genuinely more spread out.
Exam trap
Range uses only the two extreme values — it ignores everything in between and is highly sensitive to a single outlier. Also, for grouped data use class limits (L and S), not mid-values or frequencies.
Identify the largest and smallest of the 8 marks, then apply the range and coefficient formulas directly.
Range=L−S; Coefficient of Range=(L−S)/(L+S).
L=48,S=25. Range =23. Coefficient =23/73≈0.315.
Range =23 marks; Coefficient of Range ≈0.315
Step 1 — Identify the extreme values. Among (32, 45, 28, 38, 41, 25, 36, 48), the largest is L=48 and the smallest is S=25.
Step 2 — Compute the Range.
Range=L−S=48−25=23
Step 3 — Compute the Coefficient of Range.
Coefficient of Range=L+SL−S=48+2548−25=7323≈0.3151
Independent check. Sorting the 8 marks (25, 28, 32, 36, 38, 41, 45, 48) confirms 25 and 48 sit at the two ends with no value beyond them.
Range =23 marks; Coefficient of Range =23/73≈0.315
Using n=8 (the number of students) anywhere in this calculation is a category error — Range and its coefficient depend ONLY on the two extreme values, never on how many observations there are in total.
- CBSE 2023Set ANNUAL1 markMCQQ.If the values of a distribution are 10, 15, 5, 25 and 30, then the co-efficient of range is :(a) 3525(b) 25(c) 2535(d) 35
›Reveal solutionSolution
Coefficient of range =L+SL−S=30+530−5=3525.
The values are 10,15,5,25,30.
Step 1 — identify the largest and smallest:
L=30,S=5
Step 2 — the coefficient of range is
L+SL−S=30+530−5=3525
✓Final answer(a) 3525
- CBSE 2023Set ANNUAL1 markQ.Answer the following questions within one sentence each : What do you mean by a measure of dispersion ?
›Reveal solutionSolution
A measure of dispersion quantifies the scatter of data about a central value.
A measure of dispersion (such as range, quartile deviation, mean deviation or standard deviation) indicates how widely the individual observations are spread out from an average value of the distribution. A small dispersion means the values cluster closely around the average (the average is representative); a large dispersion means they are widely scattered.
✓Final answerA measure of dispersion is a statistical quantity showing the extent to which the values of a distribution are spread out or scattered about a central (average) value.
- CBSE 2022Set ANNUAL1 markMCQQ.The difference between the greatest and the smallest value of a distribution is known as :(a) Coefficient of range(b) Range(c) Mean deviation(d) Standard deviation
›Reveal solutionSolution
Range =L−S (largest minus smallest).
By definition, for a data set with largest value L and smallest value S,
Range=L−S.
The coefficient of range (L+SL−S) is its relative version, but the plain difference itself is simply the range.
✓Final answerOption (b) — Range.
- CBSE 2022Set ANNUAL1 markMCQQ.A measure of dispersion, that does not base on all the values of a distribution, is :(a) Standard deviation(b) Coefficient of variation(c) Mean deviation(d) Range
›Reveal solutionSolution
Range =L−S uses only extremes, not all data.
The range is computed as L−S (largest minus smallest), so it ignores all the intermediate observations. In contrast:
- Standard deviation uses squared deviations of all values,
- Coefficient of variation is built from the standard deviation and mean of all values,
- Mean deviation averages the absolute deviations of all values.
Hence the range is the measure not based on all the values.
✓Final answerOption (d) — Range.
- CBSE 2019Set ANNUAL1 markMCQQ.From the alternatives given under each bit, write serially the correct answer along with its serial number against each bit:(a) The difference between the greatest and smallest values of a distribution is called(a) Range(b) Quartile Deviation(c) Mean Deviation(d) Standard Deviation
›Reveal solutionSolution
Correct option: (a) Range.
The range is the simplest absolute measure of dispersion, defined as
Range=L−S,
the difference between the largest value L and the smallest value S in the data. Quartile deviation, mean deviation and standard deviation are other measures but none is defined as just the greatest-minus-smallest gap.
✓Final answerOption (a) Range.
- CBSE 2019Set ANNUAL1 markMCQQ.(g) An absolute measure of dispersion is(a) Range(b) Coefficient of quartile deviation(c) Coefficient of mean deviation(d) Coefficient of variation
›Reveal solutionSolution
Correct option: (a) Range.
Measures of dispersion are of two types: absolute (in the same units as the observations, e.g. range, quartile deviation, mean deviation, standard deviation) and relative (unit-free ratios/percentages used for comparison, e.g. coefficient of range, coefficient of quartile deviation, coefficient of mean deviation, coefficient of variation). Among the options, only range is an absolute measure; the other three are relative measures.
✓Final answerOption (a) Range.
