The Golden Revolution was the boom in horticulture — fruits, vegetables, flowers, honey — that made India a leading producer of many horticultural crops.
Green Revolution
- Refers to the large increase in the production of foodgrains, especially wheat and rice.
- Achieved through the adoption of the new agricultural strategy — high-yielding variety (HYV) seeds, chemical fertilisers, pesticides, assured irrigation and modern machinery.
- Made India self-sufficient in foodgrains and enabled the building of buffer stocks.
- Its benefits were initially confined to wheat- and rice-growing regions (Punjab, Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh).
Golden Revolution
- Refers to the rapid growth in the production of horticulture.
- The period between 1991 and 2003 is called the Golden Revolution period, because during this time the planned investment in horticulture became highly productive.
- Horticulture covers fruits, vegetables, flowers (floriculture), tuber crops, spices, medicinal and aromatic plants, plantation crops, and honey (apiculture).
- It made India a world leader in the production of mangoes, bananas, coconuts, cashew nuts and a number of spices, and second in the production of fruits and vegetables.
- Horticulture has become a means of improving livelihoods, providing employment, adding to nutrition, and raising the incomes of small farmers and women.
