The passbook and cash book balances disagree for two reasons: timing differences on cheques in transit, and one-sided entries/errors.

Cheques issued-not-presented and deposited-not-collected, plus bank-only items (charges, interest, direct deposits, dishonours) and mistakes, cause the gap.

Concept. Both the cash book and the passbook record the same bank transactions, so ideally they should show the same balance. In practice they differ because either the timing of recording differs, or an item/error is recorded by only one of the two parties.
