Both original trucks are lost during 2013‑14; the only asset left is the fresh truck bought 31 Jan 2014, so the Truck Account closes at ₹11,80,000. Depreciation is 10% on reducing balance, charged directly to the Truck A/c.

Concept & treatment. Under the written‑down‑value method depreciation each year is 10% of the opening book value, so the charge falls over time. Depreciation is charged up to the date each truck is destroyed; the truck's WDV at that date is compared with the amount realised (insurance claim for Truck 1, sale of the wreck for Truck 2) and the shortfall is a loss to Profit & Loss.

Working Notes

  1. Each truck: 2011‑12 dep = 10,00,000 × 10% × 6/12 = ₹50,000 → WDV ₹9,50,000; 2012‑13 dep = ₹95,000 → WDV ₹8,55,000 (on 1 Apr 2013).
  2. Truck 1: dep 1 Apr–1 Jul 2013 (3 m) = 8,55,000 × 10% × 3/12 = ₹21,375 → WDV ₹8,33,625; Loss = ₹8,33,625 − ₹6,00,000 = ₹2,33,625. …
