Percentile (grouped/continuous data): the value below which of observations lie,

Percentile Rank of a given value : the percentage of observations lying below ,
using the same symbols, with now the class containing and the cumulative frequency before it.
- Direction of the question: Percentile starts from a percentage () and asks for the value that cuts it off; Percentile Rank starts from a value () and asks for the percentage of data below it.
- Units: is expressed in the units of the data (e.g., marks, cm, ₹); is always expressed as a percentage (0–100), regardless of the data's units.
