This two-stage experiment (coin, then ball-or-die) has a sample space of 13 outcomes: 7 from the head branch (drawing 1 of 7 distinguishable balls) plus 6 from the tail branch (die faces 1–6).

Sample Space SS = set of ALL possible outcomes of a random experiment. When an experiment has two stages that depend on an earlier outcome (here, the coin toss decides which sub-experiment follows), list every combination of (stage-1 outcome, stage-2 outcome).

  1. Stage 1: toss a coin — outcomes Head (H) or Tail (T).
  2. If Head (H): draw one ball from the bag of 3 blue ++ 4 white =7=7 balls. To fully specify outcomes, label the individual balls b1,b2,b3b_1,b_2,b_3 (blue) and w1,w2,w3,w4w_1,w_2,w_3,w_4 (white); this branch gives 7 outcomes: Hb1,Hb2,Hb3,Hw1,Hw2,Hw3,Hw4Hb_1,Hb_2,Hb_3,Hw_1,Hw_2,Hw_3,Hw_4.
  3. If Tail (T): throw a die — outcomes are the face shown, 11 through 66; this branch gives 6 outcomes: T1,T2,T3,T4,T5,T6T1,T2,T3,T4,T5,T6. …
