Each day's new recipients are 4 times the previous day's, forming a GP; sum the first 7 days (Monday–Sunday) to get the total reach.

Sum of the first nn terms of a GP: Sn=a(rn−1)r−1S_n=\dfrac{a(r^n-1)}{r-1}, where a=a= new recipients on Day 1, r=r= common ratio, n=n= number of days.

  1. Day 1 (Monday): the person sends to 44 friends, so a=4a=4.
  2. Each recipient forwards to 4 more people the next day, so the number of NEW recipients each day is 44 times the previous day's new recipients: r=4r=4.
  3. "This process goes on for a week" ⇒n=7\Rightarrow n=7 days.
  4. Substitute into the sum formula: S7=4(47−1)4−1=4(47−1)3S_{7}=\dfrac{4\left(4^{7}-1\right)}{4-1}=\dfrac{4\left(4^{7}-1\right)}{3} …
