Health-related fitness has five components — muscular endurance, cardiorespiratory endurance, flexibility, muscular strength and body composition. The book stresses that these are "an integral part of an individual's daily life" — used "every day without consciously knowing about them" by a doctor, a farmer or a sportsperson alike. A higher level of health-related fitness is directly related to better skill performance (e.g., moderate muscular strength prevents neck/back/knee pain, while high muscular strength improves weightlifting/jumps/throws).
Skill-related fitness has six components — agility, balance, coordination, reaction time, power and speed. These are associated specifically with PERFORMANCE: an individual with good skill-related fitness achieves higher levels of motor skill, a prerequisite for sport and for certain jobs (e.g., agility matters for both a combat-sports athlete AND a firefighter).
