Over-training comes from too much load with too little recovery; it shows as constant fatigue, poor sleep and dropping performance, and is remedied by rest, reduced load, and gradual progression.

Causes of over-training:

  • Excessive training load with insufficient recovery — the main cause.
  • Sudden, large increases in load (violating progression).
  • Too few rest days and inadequate sleep.
  • Poor nutrition and hydration, and mental/emotional stress.

Symptoms of over-training:

  • Constant tiredness/fatigue that rest does not relieve.
  • Disturbed sleep, loss of appetite, weight loss.
  • Irritability, mood changes and loss of motivation.
  • Falling performance, and greater susceptibility to injury and illness.

Prevention:

  • Increase load gradually (follow progression) and balance it with recovery.
  • Build in adequate rest days and sleep, and ensure proper nutrition.
  • Monitor the athlete (heart rate, sleep, mood, performance) to catch early signs.

Remedy (once it occurs):

  • Reduce or stop the load and give the body complete rest and recovery. …
