New profit-sharing ratio 5:3:2. Gaurav's proportionate capital = ₹20,000 (total firm capital ₹1,00,000). He brings ₹24,000 in all (₹20,000 capital + ₹4,000 premium); premium credited to Ashoo ₹2,500 and Rahul ₹1,500.

Concept

'Proportionate capital' means the new partner's capital must bear the same proportion to the firm's total capital as his profit share does. Since the old partners' capitals are already fully adjusted, their combined figure stands for their combined new share; scaling it up gives the firm's total capital, from which the new partner's share is read off. This is a common NCERT Class 12 Accountancy adjustment-of-capitals variant where the new partner's capital is the unknown.

Working Notes

1. New profit-sharing ratio — Gaurav's share 1/5; remaining 4/5 shared by Ashoo and Rahul in old ratio 5:3.

  • Ashoo = 4/5 × 5/8 = 20/40; Rahul = 4/5 × 3/8 = 12/40; Gaurav = 1/5 = 8/40
  • New ratio = 20:12:8 = 5:3:2

2. Gaurav's proportionate capital — Ashoo and Rahul together hold 5/10 + 3/10 = 8/10 of profit and ₹80,000 of capital. Total capital = ₹80,000 × 10/8 = ₹1,00,000. Gaurav's 2/10 share = ₹20,000.

3. Premium for goodwill — ₹4,000 credited to the sacrificing partners. Sacrifice: Ashoo 5/8 − 5/10 = 5/40; Rahul 3/8 − 3/10 = 3/40 → sacrificing ratio 5:3. So Ashoo ₹2,500, Rahul ₹1,500.
