Q.Rajat is playing a game of rolling a die with his friends. According to the game rules, he will win Rs 5 for rolling an even number and for getting an odd digit on the die, he looses ₹2. If X represents the amount of money Rajat wins or loses. Show that X is a random variable and also represent it as a function on the sample space of the game play.

On the die's sample space S={1,2,3,4,5,6}S=\{1,2,3,4,5,6\}, XX assigns a real winning/losing amount to every outcome, so XX is a (real-valued) random variable.

A random variable XX is a real-valued function X:S→RX:S\to\mathbb{R} defined on the sample space SS of a random experiment.

  1. Experiment: roll a fair die once. Sample space S={1,2,3,4,5,6}S=\{1,2,3,4,5,6\}.
  2. Rule: even number ⇒\Rightarrow win ₹5; odd number ⇒\Rightarrow lose ₹2 (i.e. −₹2-\text{₹}2).
  3. Define X(ω)=X(\omega)= amount won/lost for outcome ω\omega: X(2)=X(4)=X(6)=5,X(1)=X(3)=X(5)=−2.X(2)=X(4)=X(6)=5,\qquad X(1)=X(3)=X(5)=-2. …
