The Cyclic method draws a league fixture by fixing one position (a team, or a "Bye" when N is odd) and rotating the remaining teams by one position every round; for 5 teams (odd) this gives 5 rounds, one bye per team, and 10 matches in total.

The Cyclic method — procedure

  • Total matches for N teams = N(N − 1)/2.
  • Number of rounds: N − 1 rounds if N is even (no bye needed); N rounds if N is odd (one team gets a bye each round, a different team every time).
  • To draw the fixture: arrange the teams around a fixed pivot position. When N is odd, the pivot position is a "Bye" instead of a team, and the N teams rotate around it, one position at a time, round after round. Whichever team lands opposite the Bye in a given round does not play that round; every other pair of positions across from each other plays a match. After each round, rotate the teams by one position (the Bye position itself never moves) to generate the next round's pairings. This repeats until every team has had exactly one bye and every pair of teams has met exactly once.

Cyclic fixture for 5 teams (1–5)

N = 5 is odd, so:

  • Rounds = N = 5
  • Matches = N(N − 1)/2 = 5 × 4 / 2 = 10
