Q.The wavelength of a probe is roughly a measure of the size of a structure that it can probe in some detail. The quark structure of protons and neutrons appears at the minute length-scale of 10−15 m10^{-15}\ \text{m} or less. This structure was first probed in early 1970's using high energy electron beams produced by a linear accelerator at Stanford, USA. Guess what might have been the order of energy of these electron beams. (Rest mass energy of electron = 0.511 MeV0.511\ \text{MeV}.)

A probing wavelength of 10−1510^{-15} m requires momentum p=h/λ≈6.6×10−19p=h/\lambda \approx 6.6\times10^{-19} kg m/s. Since pcpc then works out to be over 1000 times the electron's rest mass energy, the electron is ultra-relativistic and E≈pc≈1.24E\approx pc \approx 1.24 GeV, of order 1 GeV.

Step 1 — Momentum needed for λ∼10−15 m\lambda \sim 10^{-15}\ \text{m}.

p=hλ=6.63×10−3410−15=6.63×10−19 kg m/sp = \frac{h}{\lambda} = \frac{6.63\times10^{-34}}{10^{-15}} = 6.63\times10^{-19}\ \text{kg m/s}

Step 2 — Check whether the electron is relativistic.

pc=(6.63×10−19)(3×108)=1.989×10−10 J=1.989×10−101.6×10−19 eV≈1.24×109 eV=1.24 GeVpc = (6.63\times10^{-19})(3\times10^{8}) = 1.989\times10^{-10}\ \text{J} = \frac{1.989\times10^{-10}}{1.6\times10^{-19}}\ \text{eV} \approx 1.24\times10^{9}\ \text{eV} = 1.24\ \text{GeV}

Comparing to the electron's rest mass energy, mec2=0.511 MeV=0.000511 GeVm_ec^2 = 0.511\ \text{MeV} = 0.000511\ \text{GeV}: since pc≫mec2pc \gg m_ec^2 by more than a factor of 2000, the electron must be ultra-relativistic.

Step 3 — Estimate the total energy. …
