Adaptation is the body rebuilding itself stronger, and this happens during recovery — so recovery and adaptation together turn training stress into the training effect (improved performance).

The training effect is the lasting improvement in performance that training produces. It depends on the combined action of adaptation and recovery:

  • Adaptation is the body's lasting adjustment to repeated training loads. When stressed by a suitable load, the body responds by repairing and rebuilding itself slightly stronger — stronger muscles, a more efficient heart and lungs, better endurance and skill.
