Chlorophyll b, xanthophylls and carotenoids are the accessory pigments that broaden the wavelengths of light a plant can use for photosynthesis and shield chlorophyll a from light-induced damage.

A chromatographic separation of leaf pigments reveals that the colour of leaves comes not from a single pigment but from four: chlorophyll a (bright/blue-green), chlorophyll b (yellow-green), xanthophylls (yellow) and carotenoids (yellow to yellow-orange).
