1. Planning leads to rigidity: Once plans are drawn up, managers may feel bound to follow them even if the situation has changed, and deviating risks being seen as inefficient — this reduces an organisation's ability to adapt quickly.
2. Planning may not work in a dynamic environment: Business environments keep changing — government policy, competitor moves, customer preferences and technology can all shift suddenly — and no plan can accurately foresee every future development, so a plan drawn up today may become outdated or unworkable tomorrow.
3. Planning reduces creativity: Planning is usually done by senior/top management, and other managers are simply expected to execute it as laid down, which can reduce their scope to think and act independently or innovatively.
4. Planning involves huge costs: Both in terms of time and money — drawing up detailed plans requires research, forecasting, expert input and analysis, which can be expensive, and if a plan then fails to deliver results, those costs outweigh the benefit.
5. Planning is a time-consuming process: It can sometimes leave little time for actual implementation, especially in urgent/emergency situations.
