Planning, in Kerala Plus Two (DHSE) Commerce, is deciding in advance what to do and how. Despite its importance, it has limitations: rigidity, poor fit in a dynamic environment, reduced creativity, heavy cost, time consumption, no guarantee of success and a false sense of security — any five are explained below.

Planning is the primary function of management, but it has the following limitations (any five):

  1. Planning leads to rigidity: Once plans are drawn up, managers may feel bound to follow them and become reluctant to change, even when circumstances change. This inflexibility can restrict the freedom of managers and become a source of trouble.

  2. Planning may not work in a dynamic environment: The business environment is constantly changing — economic, political, technological and legal conditions keep shifting. Planning cannot foresee all these changes, so plans made for a stable situation may fail in a dynamic one.

  3. Planning reduces creativity: In most organisations, planning is done by top management while others merely implement the plans. This means subordinates cannot deviate from plans or add fresh ideas, which curbs their initiative and creativity.

  4. Planning involves huge costs: Formulating plans requires collecting information, scientific calculation, expert advice and detailed analysis. The costs incurred — in time, money and effort — may sometimes not be justified by the benefits.
