Both fission and fusion release energy because the products end up higher up the binding-energy-per-nucleon curve (closer to iron, A≈56) than the starting nuclei - fission approaches this peak from the heavy end, fusion from the light end.

The binding energy per nucleon (BE/ABE/A) curve rises steeply for light nuclei, peaks around A≈56A \approx 56 (iron region, the most tightly bound nuclei), and then falls slowly for heavier nuclei.

Nuclear fission: A heavy nucleus (large AA, on the high-A descending part of the curve, so relatively lower BE/ABE/A) splits into two medium-mass daughter nuclei that lie closer to the peak, i.e. with higher binding energy per nucleon than the parent. This increase in total binding energy is released as kinetic energy of the products (e.g. 235U^{235}\text{U} fission).
