Traditionally, as set out for GSHSEB Std 11 Economics, this scope is organised under five interlinked branches, each corresponding to a stage in how an economy handles its scarce resources.
1. Consumption: Studies how individuals and households use goods and services to satisfy their wants, what determines the quantity of a good purchased, and how consumer choices respond to price and income.
2. Production: Studies how goods and services are created by combining the four factors of production — land, labour, capital and entrepreneurship — and the laws governing output, such as returns to scale and the choice of production technique.
3. Exchange: Studies how goods and services, once produced, move from producers to consumers through markets — covering how prices are formed, how money functions as a medium of exchange, and how domestic and international trade operate.
4. Distribution: Studies how the income generated by production is shared among the owners of the factors of production — rent to land, wages to labour, interest to capital, and profit to entrepreneurship — and the theories explaining what determines each share.
5. Public Finance: Studies the economic role of the government — how it raises revenue through taxation, how it spends on public goods and welfare, how it borrows, and how the government budget is planned and its deficits classified.
These five branches are not watertight compartments — a change in production methods affects the distribution of income among factors, which in turn affects consumption patterns in the economy, and government (public finance) decisions influence and are influenced by all the others. …
