Range and Coefficient of Range

Range is the simplest measure of dispersion — the difference between the largest (LL) and smallest (SS) values in a data set.

Range=L−S\text{Range} = L - S

Coefficient of Range=L−SL+S\text{Coefficient of Range} = \dfrac{L-S}{L+S}

  • For individual and discrete series, LL and SS are simply the largest and smallest values actually observed (or, for a discrete series, the largest and smallest values of the variable xx, ignoring frequency).
  • For a continuous (grouped) frequency distribution, LL is taken as the upper limit of the highest class and SS as the lower limit of the lowest class.
