The Consumer Protection Act gives six rights: safety, information, choice, to be heard, redressal and consumer education.

Rights available to consumers under the Consumer Protection Act:

  • Right to Safety — the right to be protected against goods and services that are hazardous to life, health and property. Consumers should get quality goods that are safe to use (e.g. ISI/AGMARK-marked products).

  • Right to be Informed — the right to be given complete and correct information about the quality, quantity, purity, standard, price, ingredients and date of manufacture/expiry of goods, so the consumer can make an informed choice and is not misled by false claims.

  • Right to Choose — the right to have access to a variety of goods and services at competitive prices, and freedom to select from among them without being forced to buy a particular product.

  • Right to be Heard — the right to have one's complaints and grievances heard and given due consideration by sellers and by appropriate forums; consumers' interests must receive attention.

  • Right to Seek Redressal — the right to get relief and fair compensation against unfair trade practices, defective goods or deficient services, through the consumer courts/forums.
