Delegation has three elements — authority (right to act), responsibility (duty to perform) and accountability (answerability for results).

Elements of delegation of authority:

  • Authority — the power or right granted to a subordinate to take decisions, give orders and use resources to complete the assigned task. It flows downward from superior to subordinate.
  • Responsibility — the duty or obligation of the subordinate to carry out the task assigned to him. It flows upward, as the subordinate is bound to perform.
