Delegation has three elements: authority, responsibility and accountability.

Delegation of authority is the process by which a superior entrusts part of his work and the necessary authority to a subordinate. It consists of three elements:

  1. Authority — the power or right given to a subordinate to take decisions, give orders and use resources to complete the assigned task. Authority flows downward from superior to subordinate. Without adequate authority, the subordinate cannot perform the duty.
  2. Responsibility — the obligation or duty of the subordinate to carry out the task assigned to him. Responsibility flows upward: the subordinate is bound to perform. Authority delegated must match the responsibility given (parity of authority and responsibility). …
