Matrix structure = combination of functional (vertical) and project (horizontal) authority; each member has two bosses.

In this GSEB Class-12 Commerce organising question (draw / note on matrix organisation):

Structure (diagram described in words):

  • At the top is the General/Top Manager.
  • Down the left run the functional departments as vertical columns: Production, Finance, Marketing, Human Resources.
  • Across run the projects as horizontal rows: Project A, Project B, Project C, each headed by a Project Manager.
  • At every intersection (cell) an employee/specialist is drawn from a functional department into a project and therefore reports to two superiors - the functional head and the project head.
