Digital Economy

The digital economy refers to economic activity that results from the production, distribution, and use of digital technologies — the internet, mobile networks, digital payment systems, and data-driven platforms — rather than only traditional physical modes of production and exchange. It has emerged as one of the fastest-growing and most transformative segments of the Indian economy, and its scope and policy background form an important part of the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) Std-12 syllabus on emerging issues.

Digital India (launched 2015)Umbrella programme to improve digital infrastructure, digital service delivery, and digital literacy across the country
JAM Trinity (Jan Dhan–Aadhaar–Mobile)Linking bank accounts (Jan Dhan Yojana), a unique digital identity (Aadhaar), and mobile connectivity to enable direct, paperless delivery of government benefits
Unified Payments Interface (UPI)A real-time, mobile-based payment system, operated by the National Payments Corporation of India, that allows instant transfer of funds between bank accounts
e-GovernanceOnline delivery of government services (applications, certificates, tax filing, licences) to reduce delay and improve transparency

The digital economy touches almost every sector — e-commerce (online retail), digital financial services (mobile banking, digital wallets, UPI), the information technology and IT-enabled services (IT/ITES) industry, online education and telemedicine, and digital agriculture (market information, e-NAM for agricultural produce). Its benefits include wider financial inclusion (bringing previously unbanked households into the formal financial system), greater transparency in welfare delivery (through Direct Benefit Transfer, which reduces leakages), improved ease of doing business, and new employment opportunities in technology-linked services. …
