"xx tends to 00" — xx takes values as close to 00 as we like, from both sides, but never equals 00.

The symbol x→0x \to 0 is read as "xx tends to 00" or "xx approaches 00." It means we let xx take a succession of values that come nearer and nearer to 00:

  • from the right (x→0+x \to 0^{+}): values like 0.1,0.01,0.001,…0.1, 0.01, 0.001, \dots
  • from the left (x→0−x \to 0^{-}): values like −0.1,−0.01,−0.001,…-0.1, -0.01, -0.001, \dots …
