Primary productivity is the rate at which producers convert solar energy into organic (biomass) matter through photosynthesis, and it forms the basis (units of energy captured) for all further energy flow in an ecosystem.

Primary productivity is defined as the amount of biomass or organic matter produced per unit area over a given time period by plants during photosynthesis. It is expressed as the amount of organic matter produced (g/m2/yr) or as the energy captured (kcal/m2/yr). Two related measures are used:

  • Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) — the total rate of production of organic matter (total photosynthesis) by producers.
