GPP measures the total organic matter a producer creates through photosynthesis; NPP is what remains after the producer's own respiration has used some of it up, and this remainder is what is actually available to the rest of the ecosystem.

Gross Primary Productivity (GPP): The rate at which producers (plants, algae) in an ecosystem capture and convert light energy into chemical (organic) energy through photosynthesis, i.e. the total amount of organic matter produced per unit area per unit time. GPP represents the total photosynthetic output before any of it is used up by the plant itself.
