From fertilisation to implantation, the fertilised egg divides repeatedly while travelling down the fallopian tube, forming a blastocyst that then embeds itself in the uterine wall about a week later.

  1. Fertilisation: occurs in the ampullary-isthmic junction of the fallopian tube, where a sperm fuses with the secondary oocyte to form a diploid zygote.
  2. Cleavage: as the zygote is gradually moved towards the uterus (aided by rhythmic contractions of the oviduct), it undergoes rapid mitotic divisions, forming first a 2-celled embryo, then 4-celled, 8-celled, and so on - these early cells are called blastomeres.
  3. Morula: continued division produces a solid ball of about 16 blastomeres, called the morula, which still resembles the size of the original zygote (no net growth yet, cells simply subdivide). …
