Phenol's -OH group can be acetylated (esterified), fully removed by zinc-dust distillation, brominated selectively under mild conditions, or oxidised to the diketone benzoquinone.

  1. Phenyl acetate (esterification/acetylation of the -OH group with acetic anhydride): C6H5-OH + (CH3CO)2O -> C6H5-O-CO-CH3 (phenyl acetate) + CH3COOH
  2. Benzene (removal of the -OH group by distillation with zinc dust, a reduction/deoxygenation reaction): C6H5-OH + Zn (dust, heat) -> C6H6 (benzene) + ZnO
  3. p-Bromophenol (mono-bromination of phenol; using bromine in a NON-aqueous, non-polar solvent like CS2 at LOW temperature avoids the multiple (2,4,6-tri-) bromination seen with aqueous bromine, giving mainly the mono-substituted para product): C6H5-OH + Br2 (in CS2, low temperature) -> p-Br-C6H4-OH (p-bromophenol, major) + HBr …
