Base-catalysed aldol condensation of two molecules of ethanal gives an aldol intermediate, which loses water on heating to give but-2-enal - a classic textbook route from a simple aldehyde to an alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehyde.

Ethanal (CH3CHO) has an alpha-hydrogen, so it can undergo base-catalysed self-addition (aldol reaction): dilute NaOH deprotonates the alpha-carbon of one ethanal molecule to form a carbanion (stabilised as an enolate), which then attacks the carbonyl carbon of a second ethanal molecule.

Step 1 - Aldol addition:

2 CH3CHO --[dil. NaOH]--> CH3-CH(OH)-CH2-CHO (3-hydroxybutanal, the 'aldol')
