Aldol condensation needs α\alpha-hydrogen and gives an α,β\alpha,\beta-unsaturated carbonyl; Cannizzaro needs the absence of α\alpha-hydrogen and gives an alcohol plus a carboxylate by self oxidation–reduction.

(i) Aldol condensation. Aldehydes or ketones that contain at least one α\alpha-hydrogen, in the presence of a dilute base (dil. NaOH/KOH), combine so that the carbanion (enolate) of one molecule adds to the carbonyl carbon of another, giving a β\beta-hydroxy aldehyde (aldol) or β\beta-hydroxy ketone (ketol). On warming, this loses water to form an α,β\alpha,\beta-unsaturated carbonyl compound.

Example (acetaldehyde):

2 CH3CHO→dil. NaOHCH3C∣OHH-CH2CHO→Δ,−H2OCH3CH=CHCHO2\,CH_3CHO \xrightarrow{dil.\ NaOH} CH_3\underset{OH}{\underset{|}{C}}H\text{-}CH_2CHO \xrightarrow{\Delta,-H_2O} CH_3CH{=}CHCHO

(3-hydroxybutanal → but-2-enal).
