Both cells run on a fuel/anode being oxidised and an oxidiser/cathode material being reduced, each written as a standard half-reaction in alkaline medium.

H2-O2 Fuel Cell (alkaline electrolyte, e.g. KOH):

Anode (oxidation of hydrogen gas, fuel supplied continuously):

2H2(g) + 4OH-(aq) -> 4H2O(l) + 4e-

Cathode (reduction of oxygen gas, oxidant supplied continuously):

O2(g) + 2H2O(l) + 4e- -> 4OH-(aq)

Overall: 2H2(g) + O2(g) -> 2H2O(l)

Mercury Cell (button cell, Zn-HgO, used in hearing aids/watches):

Anode (oxidation of zinc amalgam):

Zn(Hg) + 2OH-(aq) -> ZnO(s) + H2O(l) + 2e-

Cathode (reduction of mercury(II) oxide):

HgO(s) + H2O(l) + 2e- -> Hg(l) + 2OH-(aq)

Overall: Zn(Hg) + HgO(s) -> ZnO(s) + Hg(l) …
