Mobility is the drift velocity acquired per unit applied electric field, μ = vd/E = eτ/m, and directly determines a material's conductivity.

When an electric field E is applied to a conductor, free electrons acquire a drift velocity vdv_d superimposed on their random thermal motion. Mobility is defined as μ=vdE\mu = \dfrac{v_d}{E} — a measure of how easily charge carriers move through the material under a given field.

Since vd=eEτmv_d = \dfrac{eE\tau}{m} (from the relation between drift velocity, field, and average relaxation time τ between collisions), mobility can also be written as μ=eτm\mu = \dfrac{e\tau}{m}.
