Mobility measures how easily a charge carrier drifts in response to an applied field; it is defined as drift velocity per unit electric field, and follows directly from the microscopic (Drude) model of conduction.

Definition: Mobility (mu) of a charge carrier is the magnitude of its drift velocity per unit applied electric field:

mu = v_d / E

Unit: v_d has units m/s, E has units V/m (= N/C), so [mu] = (m/s)/(V/m) = m^2 V^-1 s^-1.

Derivation: In a conductor, between collisions a free electron (charge -e, mass m) accelerates under the field E with acceleration a = eE/m. If tau is the average time between collisions (relaxation time), the drift velocity built up is:

v_d = a tau = (eE/m) tau = (e tau / m) E

Comparing with v_d = mu E:
