Self-inductance L relates a coil's own flux linkage to its current (Φ = LI); Faraday's law then gives the self-induced emf as e = -L(dI/dt).

Self-inductance is the property of a coil by virtue of which it opposes any change in the current flowing through it, by inducing an emf in itself.

Step 1: The magnetic flux linked with a coil is proportional to the current flowing through it: Φ∝I⇒Φ=LI\Phi \propto I \Rightarrow \Phi = LI, where L (the self-inductance / coefficient of self-induction) depends only on the coil's geometry (number of turns, area, length, core material).
